ornamental shoulder piece mainly used to hold rank insignia.
Exposure
contact with hazardous environments or substances.
Faille
rib weave fabric with a corded effect.
Fibril
tiny fibre.
Flame Resistance
ability of a fabric to withstand ignition.
Flash Over Test
determines a garments performance against the short burst of extreme heat from a flash fire. An instrumented mannequin is used to conduct this test.
Gauge
measurement related to the number of needles per inch in a knitting machine.
Gusset
inserted fabric panel to allow for ease of movement.
Hazard
potential physical or environmental risk of harm or accident.
Heat
form of energy, caused by the vibrations of molecules in a substance.
Heat Sealed Seam
seam covered by heat activated tape followed by applied heat to seal all seams.
High Count Fabric
tightly woven fabric made from fine threads.
High Tenacity (HT)
having a greater that normal tenacity (QV)
Hydrocarbon Treatment
liquid chemical and water repellent fabric.
Hydrostatic Head
measurement of a fabric?s resistance to liquid pressure.
Induction
process by which a body, having electrical or magnetic properties, can produce similar properties on a nearby body without direct contact.
Interliner
second layer of fabric that sits between the outer and inner layers of fabric.
ISO
International Standards Organisation.
Keratin
protein fibres forming the outer layer of hair or nails and found in sheep?s fleece.
Limited Oxygen Index (LOI)
can be described as the % of oxygen level that must be present in the oxygen/nitrogen mixture of air before the fibre would ignite and burn when exposed to flame.
Lustre
shine or reflecting cloth quality.
Maygar/Batwing Sleeve
triangular sleeve with no armhole seam.
Melting Point
temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid.
Modacrylic
a manufactured fibre made from resins that are copolymer (combinations) of acrylonitrile and other materials, such as vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or vinyl bromide. Modacrylic is abrasion and flame resistant.
Moisture Regain
measures the amount of moisture in a fibre, calculated as a percentage based on the dry weight.
Molten Iron Splash Test
measures a degree of burn sustained when exposed to controlled molten iron spill.
Monomer
chemical compound made up of simple molecules, from which polymers can be made.
O-PAN
Oxidised Polyacrylontrile.
